INTRODUCTION
Jasmine: [Hej allihopa] Hi, everyone. Jasmine here, and welcome back to Basic Bootcamp Lesson 3. Useful phrases for learning Swedish. This is the third in a five part series that will help you ease your way into Swedish.
Morten: Hey, [Jag heter Morten]. I'm Morten. Welcome.
Jasmine: In this lesson you will learn several essential phrases to help you learn Swedish in Swedish.
Morten: You can use these phrases when you’re at a loss for words or caught in a confusing situations.
Jasmine: These phrases will help you avoid or resolve misunderstandings whenever and wherever you are in Sweden.
Morten: Using Swedish to learn Swedish can help you improve much faster.
Jasmine: Ok. Here we have a little Swedish dream sequence for you.
Morten: Yes, it’s a really common situations a learner will be in.
Jasmine: The case of a lacking word.
Morten: You want to say something but don’t have the vocabulary word.
Jasmine: For some of us it’s not just a dream, maybe more like a recurring nightmare.
Morten: But the nightmare is over now.
Jasmine: So listen to Morten and me and try to overcome some language difficulties by asking simple but very useful phrases and try to keep up.
Morten: Let’s listen to the conversation.

Morten: ost
Jasmine: Snälla, tala långsammare.
Morten: O-s-t
Jasmine: Kan du skriva ner det på svenska åt mig, tack.
Morten: Let’s hear it slowly now.
Jasmine: Ursäkta mig, hur säger man "cheese på svenska?
Morten: Ost
Jasmine: Ursäkta men, jag förstår inte. Säg det en gång till, tack.
Morten: ost
Jasmine: Snälla, tala långsammare.
Morten: O-s-t
Jasmine: Kan du skriva ner det på svenska åt mig, tack.
Morten: And now with the translation.
Jasmine: Ursäkta mig, hur säger man "cheese på svenska?
Jasmine: Excuse me, how do you say "cheese" in Swedish?
Morten: Ost
Morten: Cheese
Jasmine: Ursäkta men, jag förstår inte. Säg det en gång till, tack.
Jasmine: I'm sorry, I don't understand. Say it once again, please.
Morten: ost
Morten: Cheese
Jasmine: Snälla, tala långsammare.
Jasmine: Please, speak slower.
Morten: O-s-t
Morten: Chee-se
Jasmine: Kan du skriva ner det på svenska åt mig, tack.
Jasmine: could you please write it down in Swedish for me, thanks.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Morten: Now you will never be at a loss for words again.
Jasmine: That’s right. Even if you find yourself in one of the major tourist spots where people are used to non-Swedish speakers, there’s no longer any excuse to not try out these phrases. I guarantee you it will improve your Swedish.
Morten: With these expressions you can make everyone you meet into a walking, talking dictionary.
Jasmine: Of course, that shouldn’t be your main reason to learn these phrases.
Morten: But the Swedes you meet will love the fact that you’re making an effort, trying to communicate in Swedish.
Jasmine: Absolutely. Maybe they will even give you a tip on how to find your way to some of the other cultural treats that Sweden has for that authentic Swedish experience.
Morten: So it’s a bit like a guidebook.
Jasmine: Yes, guidebook can only get you that far though, so it is definitely a good idea to ask the locals where to go. There are just so many hidden spots that you can’t learn from a book.
Morten: And there is no experience quite like totally emerging yourself into another culture.
Jasmine: Now that you’ve learned these important Swedish phrases, you’ll be on your way in no time.
VOCAB LIST
Morten: Yes, so what exactly are all these words? Let’s break them down. Our first word is…
Jasmine: [Ursäkta mig]
Morten: “Excuse me” or “I'm sorry”.
Jasmine: [Ursäkta mig]
Morten: The next word is…
Jasmine: [Hur]
Morten: How.
Jasmine: [Hur]
Morten: Ok. And the next word we have is…
Jasmine: [Säger]
Morten: Next we have…
Jasmine: [På svenska]
Morten: In Swedish.
Jasmine: [På svenska]
Morten: Then we have…
Jasmine: [Inte]
Morten: “Not” or “don’t”.
Jasmine: [Inte]
Morten: Next is…
Jasmine: [Förstår]
Morten: Understand.
Jasmine: [Förstår]
Morten: And the next word is…
Jasmine: [En gång till]
Morten: One more time.
Jasmine: [En gång till]
Morten: Next is…
Jasmine: [Tack]
Morten: Thank you, please.
Jasmine: [Tack]
Morten: Then we have…
Jasmine: [Tala]
Morten: Speak, talk.
Jasmine: [Tala]
Morten: And the next word is…
Jasmine: [Långsammare]
Morten: Slower.
Jasmine: [Långsammare]
Morten: Next is…
Jasmine: [Skriv ner]
Morten: Write down.
Jasmine: [Skriv ner]
Morten: And finally we have…
Jasmine: [Åt mig]
Morten: For me.
Jasmine: [Åt mig]
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Morten: We’ve covered all the words and now we will explain their usage.
Jasmine: But it’s going to be easy.
Morten: Because most of them have the same usage as in English.
Jasmine: With small exceptions such as [tack] which we can use both as “please” and “thank you”. But again, its meaning is defined by its usage.
Morten: To say “excuse me” you say…
Jasmine: [Ursäkta mig]
Morten: And once more, a bit more slowly, please?
Jasmine: [Ursäkta mig]
Morten: [Ursäkta mig] That’s a very useful expression. With it, and the other vocabulary words, we’ve equipped you with everything you need to resolve misunderstandings.
Jasmine: If you didn’t understand the word the first time, you know the phrase for “say it once again, please”.
Morten: Which is?
Jasmine: [En gång till, tack]
Morten: Slowly?
Jasmine: [En gång till, tack]
Morten: And one more time, fast.
Jasmine: [En gång till, tack]
Morten: And if you still have problems understanding your companions, you know how to ask them to speak slower.
Jasmine: [Tala långsammare]
Morten: And if you think the word is useful for you, you can ask someone to show you how to write the word or to help you with your Swedish writing.
Jasmine: [Kan du skriva ner det på svenska åt mig, tack]
Morten: Well, I used to carry a notebook. Once I had the word in its English equivalent, I would just open the book any time I had a moment, on the bus, whatever, and study the words.
Jasmine: Oh, that is what I do too.

Lesson focus

Morten: Once the word is somewhere in your brain, you just need to give yourself the chance to encounter it a few times in different circumstances.
Jasmine: Yes. This writing down method is great because once you introduce yourself to the word and write it down, you’re giving yourself the chance to hear it again and use it again.
Morten: And it only takes a few times.
Jasmine: Soon, you’ll have the vocabulary of a native Swedish speaker.
Morten: The first phrase we had was [Ursäkta, hur säger man ... på svenska?].
Jasmine: Excuse me, how do we say… in Swedish?
Morten: The first word is [Ursäkta], which means “excuse me”. The next word is [hur], which means “how”.
Jasmine: We’ve mentioned this word before in the first Basic Bootcamp lesson in the phrase [Hur mår du?], “How are you?”, remember?
Morten: Oh, that’s right. Well, the good news is that this word hasn’t changed its meaning since and it never will.
Jasmine: Easy, huh? [Hur]
Morten: Ok, and the next word we have is…
Jasmine: [Säger]
Morten: Means “say”.
Jasmine: And then we have…
Morten: [man]
Jasmine: Which is the same as “one” when used as a pronoun. So here we have [Hur säger man...] which literally means “how do one say” and then just add the word you want to know followed by…
Morten: [på svenska]
Jasmine: And then just add the word you want to know followed by [på svenska].
Morten: This translates as “in Swedish” and it refers to the language in our case. All you need here is hope that you companion speaks English well enough to understand and say it in Swedish for you. So, in the dialogue we heard…
Jasmine: [Ursäkta mig. Hur säger man “cheese” på svenska?]
Morten: Right. How will we use the same phrase but change “cheese” for “ticket”?
Jasmine: [Ursäkta mig. Hur säger man “ticket” på svenska?]
Morten: Great. Listeners, please listen and repeat.
Jasmine: [Ursäkta mig. Hur säger man “ticket” på svenska?]
Morten: Ok. Let’s move to the second phrase.
Jasmine: [Ursäkta, men jag förstår inte. Säg det en gång till tack.] Please say it again.
Morten: [Inte] is like the English word “not” and is used to make the sentence negative.
Jasmine: That’s right and our next verb is clear evidence of that. [Förstår]
Morten: [Förstår] literally means “understand”. And the next word is…
Jasmine: [Säg]
Morten: [Säg] means “say”.
Jasmine: Next is [det] which literally translates as to “it”, which is finally followed by the word for “one more time”. [En gång till]
Morten: So literally we are saying “Say it one more time, thank you”. Great, let’s repeat the whole phrase again. Listeners, listen carefully and repeat.
Jasmine: [Ursäkta, men jag förstår inte. Säg det en gång till tack]
Morten: Let’s move to the sentence number three. [Snälla] is the word for please. And the next word is…
Jasmine: [Tala] and it means “speak”. And in order not to sound rude, we put [snälla] before it. “Please speak”.
Morten: The next word is [långsammare].
Jasmine: Which means “slower”. In case you wonder how to say “slower” in Swedish, [långsammare] it is a comparative adjective and means “slower”.
Morten: So [långsammare] is an adjective and means “slower”. Let’s say the phrase once more again. Listeners, pay close attention and repeat.
Jasmine: [Snälla, tala långsammare]
Morten: And finally, the last phrase for this lesson - [Kan du skriva ner det på svenska åt mig, tack]. “Could you please write this down in Swedish for me, thanks?” We start with the question [kan du] or “can you”.
Jasmine: [Kan du]
Morten: Followed by saying what you want done which in this case is [skriva].
Jasmine: [Skriva]
Morten: And since we want to say that we want something written down for me, we add [åt mig]. So this will translate as “for me”. Let’s hear it again.
Jasmine: [Åt mig]
Morten: Finally, we have [på svenska], meaning “in Swedish”.
Jasmine: [På svenska]
Morten: Listeners, please listen to the whole phrase again and repeat out loud.
Jasmine: [Kan du skriva ner det på svenska åt mig, tack.]

Outro

Morten: That’s it for this lesson.
Jasmine: Thanks for listening. [Hej då]
Morten: See you. Bye-bye.
