Swedish Survival Phrases Lesson 54 - What time does it close or open?
In today's lesson, we'll introduce you to a phrase that you'll need on several occasions. We all know you want to see the sights in Sweden and this phrase is essential to plan your days.
In Swedish, "What time does it open?" is När öppnar det?
När öppnar det?
Let's break it down by syllable: När öppnar det?
Now, let's hear it once again: När öppnar det?
The first word När means "when."
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: När
När
This is followed by Öppnar, which in Swedish is "opens."
Öppnar.
Öppnar.
So, to recap here, we have När öppnar. Literally, this means "when opens."
Let's take a look at the next word: Det, meaning "it."
Det.
Det.
All together, we have När öppnar det? Literally, this means "When opens it?"
It's also really important to know when places close. The worst thing to encounter is a "close" sign hanging in front of a place you want to see.
In Swedish, "What time does it close?" is När stänger det?
När stänger det?
Let's break it down by syllable: När stänger det?
Now, let's hear it once again: När stänger det?
The sentence is the same as above except for the word Öppnar, "opens," is replaced with Stänger, which means "closes." The construction is När, plus verb, plus Det.
Most stores have a sign where the times are printed. Many, many stores since then has closed on Sundays and a shorter opening time on Saturdays. Some also has closed around noon which is lunchtime. Also, certain days around holidays, they've closed. This doesn’t include a huge supermarket which almost are open all the time. It usually says Öppet alla dagar, which means "Open every day."
Öppet alla dagar.
Öppet alla dagar.
