Swedish Survival Phrases Lesson 36 - The hotel check in is only half the battle.
In today's lesson, we'll help you check in. In Sweden, there are hotels, motels, bed &breakfast, hostels, and camping sites. Today's phrase is "Check in, please."
In Swedish, "Check in, please" is Jag skulle vilja checka in.
Jag skulle vilja checka in.
Let's break it down by syllable: Jag skulle vilja checka in.
Now, let's hear it once again: Jag skulle vilja checka in.
The first word Jag means "I."
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: Jag.
Jag.
This is followed by Skulle vilja, which in English is "would like."
Skulle vilja.
Skulle vilja.
So, to recap here, we have Jag skulle vilja. Literally, this means "I would like to."
Let's take a look at the next part: Checka in, which in Swedish is "check in."
Checka in.
Checka in.
So, all together, we have Jag skulle vilja checka in. Literally, this means "I would like to check in."
Upon stating the phrase "Check in, please" you will most likely be asked, "Your name please." Which in Swedish is Och Namnet?
Och Namnet?
Let's break it down by syllable: Och Namnet?
Och Namnet?
Now, let's hear it once again: Och Namnet?
The first word Och means "and."
Let's break it down by syllable and hear it one more time: Och.
Och.
Och.
Och.
This is followed by Namnet, which in Swedish is "the name."
Namnet.
Namnet.
All together, we have Och namnet? Literally, this means "And the name?"
You might also be asked how to spell your name, which in Swedish is Kan du bokstavera det?
Kan du bokstavera det?
Let's break it down by syllable: Kan du bokstavera det?
Now, let's hear it once again: Kan du bokstavera det?
The first word Kan means "could."
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: Kan.
Kan.
This is followed by Du, which in Swedish is "you."
Du.
Let's take a look at the next word: Bokstavera, which means "spell."
Bokstavera.
Bokstavera.
Lastly, we have Det, which means "it."
Det.
Det.
All together, we have Kan du bokstavera det? Literally, this means "Could you spell it?"
The phrase Och namnet? is supposed to be an abbreviation of Och hur var namnet? which roughly means "And what was the name?" which is a little old-fashioned way of asking for names. When trying to be extra polite in Sweden, old-fashioned expressions are used. Learn them so that you'll know what it means but not for usage when most of the time, it sounds ridiculous.

Outro

Okay, to close out this lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so Lycka till. Okay, here we go!
