Becky: Alright, Peter. Let’s talk language learning mistakes.
Peter: Excellent topic, Becky. I know a lot of our listeners can relate to these...
Becky: ...and I bet a lot are afraid of making mistakes.
Peter: Just so you know, this list is based on feedback that YOU, the listeners have sent to us.
Becky: That’s right. We’ve gotten feedback from past surveys, comments on lessons, and of course your e-mails.
Peter: Right. We’re excluding most minor, specific mistakes, like not conjugating verbs properly...
Becky: ...and focusing on the mistakes that actually STOP you from improving.
Peter: Okay, let’s tackle this one head on.
Becky: The Top 5 Language Learning Mistakes and How To Fix Them.
Peter: Number one! Aiming for Perfection and Worrying About Not Being Good Enough.
Becky: This is a fun one because the whole point is that you’re worried about making mistakes.
Peter: ....and getting every little detail right...
Becky:...so you get stuck studying and perfecting the details all by yourself...
Peter: ...instead of putting the language to use, speaking and making mistakes.
Becky: The problem is that real language progress comes from using it, making mistakes...
Peter: ...and improving with feedback. So making mistakes is necessary. How do you fix this?
Becky: I think saying that you should just stop caring and start making mistakes is easier said than done.
Peter: You’re right, Becky. But here’s what you can do listeners. If you’re unsure about something...leave a comment on one of our lessons...
Becky: ...and our teachers will respond to you. Or, if you’re a Premium PLUS member...
Peter: You get access to your own native-speaking teacher.
Becky: You can practice with them and get non-stop feedback. You can send them your writing, audio recordings of yourself...
Peter: ...or even videos of yourself speaking... and they’ll fix every mistake you ever make, from grammar to pronunciation down to giving you more natural phrases to say.
Becky: They even send assignments too, right Peter?
Peter: That's right, Becky. All so you can learn and improve faster – with the help of a real teacher.
Becky: Okay, number two- Worrying about pronunciation.
Peter: Ah, this is a popular one, Becky.
Becky: Yeah, lots of learners get shy about their accents.
Peter: Well, there are two ways to reach pronunciation perfection, listeners.
Becky: First, if you’re a Premium member- Use the voice recording tool.
Peter: Find it in the Line-by-Line Audio section of any lesson...
Becky: ...and you can record yourself and compare yourself with a native speaker.
Peter: You can even see the waveform – which is the shape of the sounds on a graph – and see how closely it resembles the native speaker’s.
Becky: So, practice until you can match the native speaker’s pronunciation.
Peter: Okay, the second way, as mentioned moments ago, is for Premium PLUS users.
Becky: You can record an audio clip or video of yourself speaking, send it to your teacher...
Peter: ...and they’ll give you feedback on what’s wrong, how to improve...
Becky: ...and they’ll even send audio or video back. So, you can get examples from them.
Peter: That’s right. I’m doing this with my German Premium PLUS teacher since I’m learning German this year.
Becky: Number Three- Focusing On Only One Learning Method.
Peter: There's a big rule in life to remember, listeners. You only get better at what you spend most of your time on.
Becky: Very true. A lot of learners spend most of their time learning with textbooks.
Peter: It’s NOT wrong but... what happens is, you get good at reading and grammar...
Becky: ...but when it comes to speaking and understanding real conversations...
Peter: ....you fail. So, focusing on just one learning method, like a book, can be a big mistake...
Becky: ...if you want to speak with confidence. Make sure your methods align with your goals.
Peter: Well said, Becky. So this is why there are tons of lesson types...
Becky: We have audio lessons, if you prefer to listen while you multitask or commute...
Peter: And video, if you want to be more engaged and see the language explained on the screen…
Becky: As well as lessons and courses focused on topics like vocab, listening, reading, writing, conversations and more. You can find these in the New Learning Paths feature.
Peter: On top of that, you can study words with flashcards or your word bank....
Becky: Then there’s the 1-minute Daily Dose lessons and the Word of the Day if you can’t spare much time.
Peter: Having more than one way to learn also keeps it fun. So, you don’t get burned out.
Becky: After you’re done with one lesson, you can try something else!
Peter: Listeners, you can access all of these on the site.
Becky: Access them right now if you want to add new learning methods to your routine.
Peter: Now the Fourth mistake- Turning language learning into big deal or a far-away goal.
Becky: This is kind of related to number one, isn't it? Aiming for perfection.
Peter: You’re right, Becky. A lot of learners want perfection... so they set their goals high...
Becky: ...Like “I want to be fluent.” They make it into a huge deal. Harder than it should be.
Peter: It’s a mistake because this is how the majority of learners who quit get discouraged.
Becky: So, how can they fix it?
Peter: Easy. Listeners, we preach this rule in every single one of our exclusive Inner Circle lessons- set small, measurable goals. And we say it again and again because it works.
Becky: Ah, yes. Like speaking 3 minutes of your target language by the end of this month.
Peter: Or finishing 25 lessons of the Survival Phrases or 3-Minute Series by the end of this month.
Becky: Oh... yeah, if you do that, you’ll definitely speak AT LEAST 3 minutes if not more.
Peter: The point is, both goals aren’t hard to reach at all. And you’ll improve, guaranteed.
Becky: Both are measurable, so you know you hit them. And then you can aim higher...
Peter: ...and make progress... instead of making language learning out to be a big deal.
Becky: Great advice, Peter.
Peter: Okay, number five- Translating The Language Directly.
Peter: This is where you take what you want to say in English, or your native language...
Becky: ... and translate it word for word, to your target language.
Peter: The problem here is, most languages aren’t directly translatable.
Becky: So your message is either awkward or totally wrong. That’s kind of why online translators don’t work well.
Peter: The best fix for this is…look for a lesson that covers the phrase you want to say.
Becky: Use the search bar on the site. If it’s been said in one of our lessons, you’ll find it.
Peter: And that way, you’ll learn the proper, natural phrases in your target language.
Becky: The other way is to ask a native speaker.
Peter: So, if you’re a Premium PLUS member, simply ask your Premium PLUS teacher...
Becky: ...and they’ll tell you which phrases to use. Definitely the best way to go.
Peter: That’s the power of learning with a teacher, Becky.
Becky: Listeners, do you make any of these mistakes? Let us know!
Peter: And remember...
Becky: If you want to master your language with fast, easy lessons....
Peter: ...your own teacher, AND unlock our entire learning system, now’s the time.
