Swedish Survival Phrases lesson 12 - Restaurants: Choosing a Seat in Swedish.
There is a wide variety of Swedish food and your job as a visitor is to eat as much of as many things as possible. However, before you start eating, you have to get a table. So in today’s lesson, we’ll cover getting to the table in restaurants. As for ordering, well, you’ll just have to hang on until next week.
In Swedish, the polite greeting when entering a place of business is Välkomna.
Välkomna.
Let’s break it down by syllable: Välkomna.
This means “welcome” when approaching more than one person.
Now, usually, the first question you’ll be asked is “How many people in your party?” which in Swedish is Hur många är ni i herrskapet?
Let’s hear it once again, Hur många är ni i herrskapet?
The first word, hur, means “how.”
Then comes många, which means “many.”
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: många.
många
This is followed by är “is” and then ni “you” and then i which means “in.”
This is followed by herrskapet, which in Swedish is “the party.”
Let’s break it down by syllable: herrskapet.
herrskapet
Now, let’s go over how to answer. You just need to say the number of persons, ett, två, or tre “one, two, three.” Easy, isn’t it? You can even answer by raising as many fingers as persons. In some noiy restaurants, this might be the only way to make you understand. Today’s phrase is used in the restaurants that are a little fancier than where you usually go and that there is a host or a head waiter that’s available to take questions. But if you are in Sweden for business, you will likely end up in a place like this with your new partners. This Swedish is a little politer and old-fashioned than what you usually hear, so don’t worry if you don’t get it all. In the regular restaurant, you most likely could just walk in and pick a table. When seated, the waiter or waitress will bring the menus.

Outro

Okay, to close out today’s lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so lycka till, that means “good luck” in Swedish. Ok, here we go!
“Welcome.” - Välkomna.
Välkomna.
“How many people in your party?” - Hur många är ni i herrskapet?
