Lesson focus

Swedish Survival Phrases lesson 22 - Traveling by Bus in Sweden.
Once on the bus, you will hear announcement informing the passengers of where the bus will stop next. Now, in the case that there is no English announcement, you may not catch the location just announced, so the phrase “What is the next stop?” may be indispensable.
In Swedish, “What is the next stop?” is Vilken är nästa hållplats?
Vilken är nästa hållplats?
Let’s break it down by syllable: Vilken är nästa hållplats?
Now, let’s hear it once again, Vilken är nästa hållplats?
The first word, vilken, means “which.”
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time, vilken.
vilken
This is followed by är, which in Swedish is “is.”
är
är
So to recap here, we have Vilken är…
Literally this means “Which is…”
Let’s take a look at the next word, which is nästa, which means “next.”
nästa
nästa
Lastly, we have hållplats “stop” as in “bus stop.”
hållplats
hållplats
So all together, we have Vilken är nästa hållplats?
Literally this means, “Which is the next stop?”
Another way of inquiring could be asking, if you decide [destination] is the next stop. For this phrase, we’ll use Skansen as the destination, which is a popular place for tourists. So, the phrase “Is Skansen the next stop?” is Är nästa Skansen?
Let’s break it down by syllable: Är nästa Skansen?
Now, let’s hear it once again, Är nästa Skansen?
The first word, är, means “is.”
är
är
This is followed by nästa, which in Swedish is “next.”
nästa
nästa
So to recap here, we have Är nästa…
Literally, this means “Is next…”
And last is the location.
So all together, we have Är nästa Skansen? Literally, this means “Is next Skansen?” It is inferred that you mean the stop.
Nowadays, most buses have a little screen that says which is the next stop, but if it’s broken or you suspect that it is showing the wrong stop, you could use today’s phrase. Of course, this is the phrase to use if you can’t read the sign as well. Never be afraid to approach someone with your questions.
