Swedish Survival Phrases Lesson 34 - Learn to write in Swedish without lifting a pen.
In today's lesson, we will introduce you to a phrase that will provide you with the tools to learn from the people around. Now, a dictionary is great but don’t forget that you can use Swedish to learn in a more fun and interactive way. Today, we're going to cover a way for you to hold on to the information you get.
In Swedish, "Can you write it down, please?" is Kan du skriva ned det, tack?
Kan du skriva ned det, tack?
Let's break it down by syllable: Kan du skriva ned det, tack?
Now, let's hear it once again: Kan du skriva ned det, tack?
The first word Kan means "can" or "could."
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: Kan.
Kan.
This is followed by Du, which in Swedish is "you."
Du.
Du.
So, to recap here, we have Kan du. Literally, this means "could you" or "can you."
Let’s take a look at the next part which is Skriva ned, which is "write down."
Skriva ned.
Skriva ned.
This is followed by Det, which in Swedish is "it."
Det.
Det.
And last, we have Tack, which is "please."
Tack.
Tack.
So, all together, we have Kan du skriva ned det, tack? Literelly, this mean "Can you write it down, please?"
Once you have it, in Swedish, "Can you pronounce this, please?" is Kan du uttala det här, tack?
Kan du uttala det här, tack?
Kan du uttala det här, tack?
Let’s break it down by syllable: Kan du uttala det här, tack?
Now, let's hear it once again: Kan du uttala det här, tack?
The first word Kan means "can" or "could."
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: Kan.
Kan.
This is followed by Du, which in Swedish is "you."
Du.
Du.
So, to recap here, we have Kan du. Literally, this means "could you" or "can you."
Let's take a look at the next part which is Uttala, which means "pronounce."
Uttala.
Uttala.
This is followed by Det här, which in Swedish is "this."
Det här.
Det här.
And last, we have Tack, which is "please."
Tack.
Tack.
So, all together, we have Kan du uttala det här, tack? Literally, this means "Can you pronounce this, please?"
For saying, "Can you pronounce that, please?" just replace Det här with Det där. Then we have Kan du uttala det där, tack?
Asking if someone could write something down is essential for your stay in Sweden. For instance, when you want to ask a staff at your hotel to write down a phone number of a place, you could just ask Kan du skriva ned det, tack?
Or I you ask about your room number and they say to you verbally and you don’t catch it.
Also, asking for pronunciation is important if there is a place you want to go to and your pronunciation makes it hard for people to understand. Pick up a brochure or any other thing where the name is written, and point while asking - Kan du uttala det här, tack? or Kan du skriva ned det, tack?

Outro

Okay, to close out this lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so Lycka till. Okay, here we go!
"Can you write it down, please?" - Kan du skriva ned det, tack?
Kan du skriva ned det, tack?
"Can you pronounce this, please?" - Kan du uttala det här, tack?
