Swedish Survival Phrases Lesson 52 - Learn to say your allergies in Swedish.
In today's lesson, we'll cover a phrase that will prove invaluable for those of you who are allergic to something. Letting other people know about your allergies is vital to a fun and healthy trip.
In today's lesson, we're going to cover "I'm allergic to (something)." To start, we need something that we're allergic to. In some cases, allergies to peanuts can be extremely dangerous, so let's start there.
In Swedish, "I am allergic to peanuts" is Jag är allergisk mot jordnötter.
Jag är allergisk mot jordnötter.
Let's break it down by syllable: Jag är allergisk mot jordnötter.
Now, let's hear it once again: Jag är allergisk mot jordnötter.
The first part Jag är means "I am."
Jag är.
Jag är.
This is followed by Allergisk, which in Swedish is "allergic."
Allergisk.
Allergisk.
So, to recap here, we have Jag är allergisk. Literally, this means "I am allergic." Which by itself also could be a useful phrase.
Let's take a look at the next word: Mot, which means "against."
Mot.
Mot.
And lastly, we have Jordnötter, which in Swedish means "peanuts."
Jordnötter.
Jordnötter.
So, all together, we have Jag är allergisk mot jordnötter. Literally, this means "I am allergic against peanuts."
Now, let's go over some other common allergies. Let's try "shrimp."
In Swedish, "I am allergic to shrimp" is Jag är allergisk mot räkor.
Let's break it down by syllable: Jag är allergisk mot räkor.
Now, here it is once again: Jag är allergisk mot räkor.
Notice that the only this that changes here is Räkor, the rest is the same.
Räkor.
Räkor.
Next, we have the word for "milk," which in Swedish is Mjölk.
Mjölk.
Mjölk.
Jag är allergisk mot mjölk.
If you're allergic to milk, you're supposedly also allergic to other dairy products. In Swedish, we call that Laktosintolerant. So, instead of saying you are allergic to milk, you could say Jag är laktosintolerant.
Jag är laktosintolerant.
Jag är laktosintolerant.
Next, we have "eggs."
In Swedish, "I am allergic to eggs" is Jag är allergisk mot ägg.
Jag är allergisk mot ägg.
Jag är allergisk mot ägg.
Notice, the only this that changes here is "egg." The rest is the same.
Ägg.
In Swedish, "I am having an allergic reaction" is Jag får en allergisk reaktion,
Jag får en allergisk reaktion.
Let's break it down by syllable: Jag får en allergisk reaktion.
Now, let's hear it once again: Jag får en allergisk reaktion
The first word Jag means "I."
This is followed by Får, which in Swedish is "to be getting."
Får.
Får.
So, to recap here, we have Jag får. Literally, this means "I am getting" or "I get."
Let's take a look at the next word: En, which means "an."
Then, we got Allergisk, which in Swedish is "allergic."
Allergisk.
Allergisk.
This is followed by Reaktion, which means "reaction."
Reaktion.
Reaktion.
All together, we have Jag får en allergisk reaktion. Literally, this means "I am getting an allergic reaction."
These phrases are a must while going to a restaurant or to a party where there is food. If you aren't aware what's in what you are eating, your trip to Sweden could be something you don't want to remember. So, to avoid that, always ask what's in the food and say that you are allergic to certain things. I, myself, am allergic to numerous things but only a little bit of everything so I never need medical attention. In Sweden, companies must write a content list on their products so that allergic people would know whether if it's good to eat or not.

Outro

Okay, to close out this lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so Lycka till, that means “good luck” in Swedish. Okay, here we go!
"I am allergic to peanuts." - Jag är allergisk mot jordnötter.
Jag är allergisk mot jordnötter.
"I am having an allergic reaction." - Jag får en allergisk reaktion,
Jag får en allergisk reaktion.
