Swedish Survival Phrases lesson 14 - Restaurants: Ordering Food in Swedish.
Today, we’ll cover getting by at the table. First, you may have to get a hold of the staff. You can accomplish this by saying ursäkta, which means “excuse me.”
Ursäkta.
Let’s break it down by syllable: Ursäkta.
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time, Ursäkta.
Ursäkta.
Once a waiter or waitress comes to your table, you can go with the standard point “And this, please.” In Swedish, “This, please” is Den här, tack.
Den här, tack.
Let’s break it down by syllable: Den här, tack.
Now, here it is once again, Den här, tack.
The first part, den här, means “this.”
Let’s break it down and hear it one more time: den här.
den här
This is followed by tack, which in Swedish is “please.”

Now, if you’re feeling ambitious, you could go for “What do you recommend?” In Swedish, “What do you recommend?” is Vad rekommenderar ni.
Vad rekommenderar ni.
Let’s break it down by syllable: Vad rekommenderar ni.
Now, let’s hear it once again, Vad rekommenderar ni.
The first word, vad, means “what.”
Then comes rekommenderar, which means “recommend.”
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: rekommenderar.
rekommenderar
This is followed by ni, which in Swedish is “you,” ni.

In Sweden, manners are a must, especially at the table and therefore, I want to give you some advice. Do not eat before everyone is seated or have gotten their food. And if you pour drinks for yourself and someone else with the same beverage has an empty glass, you should offer a refill. When you want to get a hold of the staff and don’t just want to shout out at the whole restaurant, try to make eye contact and if necessary, raise your hand and if they are within earshot, say ursäkta.

Outro

Okay, to close out today’s lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so lycka till, that means “good luck” in Swedish. Ok, here we go!
“Excuse me.” - Ursäkta.

“What do you recommend?” - Vad rekommenderar ni?
