Swedish Survival Phrases Lesson 35 - "Please pass the pepper."
In today's lesson, we'll introduce you to a phrase that will definitely be useful at the dinner table. Food in Sweden will be delicious, and we know you'll be begging for more. You can use this phrase to make sure you get more of what you want.
In Swedish, "Please pass the ketchup" is Kan du skicka ketchupen?
Kan du skicka ketchupen.
Let’s break it down by syllable: Kan du skicka ketchupen?
Now, let's hear it once again: Kan du skicka ketchupen?
The first word Kan means "could."
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: Kan.
Kan.
This is followed by Du, which in Swedish is "you."
Du.
Du.
So, to recap here, we have Kan Du. Literally, this means "could you."
Let's take a look at the next word: Skicka, which means "pass."
Skicka.
Skicka.
Then you add the word what you want to get. In this case, "ketchup," which is Swedish is Ketchupen.
Ketchupen.
Ketchupen.
So, all together, we have Kan du skicka ketchupen? Literally, this means "Could you send the ketchup?"
Here’s a list of some of the most common things on the table in Sweden. All you have to do is replace the last word with the vocabulary word you want, and everything else is the same. They all should have the definite form.
Salladen, "the salad."
Grönsakerna, "the vegetables."
Senapen, "the mustard."
Ketchupen, "the ketchup."
Såsen, "the gravy."
Vattnet, "the water."
Flaskan, "the bottle."
Potatise, "the potatoes."
Brödet, "the bread."
Smöret, "the butter."
Kryddorna, "the spices."
Pepparn, "the pepper."
Saltet, "the salt."
Used frequently in Swedish homes, I present to you Kan du skicka ketchupen? Actually, some people in Sweden use ketchup on everything! I mean, literally, everything. This is definitely a phrase you will use often with your host family or if you are in a big party and the table will be too large to reach everything. In this example, I used "ketchup," but just replace it with whatever you want passed and you're all set.
