Swedish Survival Phrases Lesson 46 - Simple steps to eating unknown food gracefully.
In Sweden, there are many delicious dishes. We already covered how to order them. But now, how to eat them. That, however, is not always so straightforward. So, in today's lesson, we'll learn how to ask, "How do you eat this?"
In Swedish, "How do you eat this?" is Hur äter man det här?
Hur äter man det här?
Let’s break it down by syllable: Hur äter man det här?
Now, here it is once again: Hur äter man det här?
The first word Hur means "how."
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: Hur.
Hur.
This is followed by Äter, which in Swedish is "eat."
Äter.
Äter.
Next, we have Man, which means "few" or "one."
Man.
Man.
So, to recap here, we have Hur äter man? Literally, this means "How does one eat?"
Let’s take a look at the next part: Det här, which means "this."
Det här.
Det här.
So, all together, we have Hur äter man det här? Literally, this means "How does one eat this?"
Hopefully, they answer isn't a smart remark such as "With your mouth." Which by the way is Med munnen. If you hear this, you're in for a long night!
There are other instances when you may want to add some sauce, et cetera, to your dish. In this case, you can ask "Do you add something to this?" which in Swedish is Har man någonting till det här?
Let's break it down by syllable: Har man någonting till det här?
The first word Har means "have."
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: Har.
Har.
This is followed by Man, which also, in this case, means "few" or "one."
This is followed by Någonting, which in Swedish is "something."
Någonting.
Någonting.
So, to recap here, we have Har man någonting. Literally, this means "does one have anything."
Let's take a look at the next word: Till, which means "to."
Till.
Till.
And last, we have Det här, which still means "this."
So, all together, we have Har man någonting till det här? Literally, this means "Does one have anything to this?"
And finally, something that may come in handy for anyone out there averse to hot things. The all-important question, "Is this hot?" Hot as in "spicy."
In Swedish, "Is this hot?" is Är det starkt?
Är det starkt?
Let's break this down by syllable: Är det starkt?
Now, let's hear it once again: Är det starkt?
The first word Är means "is."
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: Är.
Är.
This is followed by Det, which in Swedish is "it."
Det.
Det.
So, to recap here, we have Är det. Literally, this means "is it."
Let's take a look at the next word which is Starkt, which means "hot" as in spicy.
Starkt.
Starkt.
So, all together, we have Är det starkt? Literally, this means "Is this strong?"
The word Någonting, which means "something," is pronounced in three different ways in spoken Swedish. Någonting, which is the way it is written. And then, Nånting or Nått. So, to say the phrase in a more natural way than Har man någonting till det här? would be Har man nånting till det här? or Har man nått till det här? To make your Swedish sound more fluent, this is the way you want to speak.
This is also something that concerns the phrase Är det starkt? Är, which means "is," is often pronounced as É rather than Är. And Det often gets the T dropped and pronounced like Dé. So in spoken Swedish, Är det starkt? would sound more like É dé starkt?

Outro

Okay, to close out this lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so Lycka till. Okay, here we go!
"How do you eat this?" - Hur äter man det här?
Hur äter man det här?
"Do you add something to this?" - Har man någonting till det här?
