Matt: Top 25 Swedish Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 15 “Do you have a cell phone?” in Swedish. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll encounter a common question for Swedish learners, and then learn how to answer like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “Do you have a cell phone?” In Swedish this is
Engla: Har du en mobil?
Matt: The first word in the question is
Engla: har
Matt: meaning “have” in English.
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) har
Matt: Listen again and repeat.
Engla: har
{Pause}
Matt: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Engla: du
Matt: meaning “you.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) du
Matt: Now repeat.
Engla: du
{Pause}
Matt: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Engla: har du
{pause}
Matt: And next is
Engla: en
Matt: meaning “a.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) en
Matt: Now repeat.

{Pause}

Matt: "Yes, I have an iPhone.” You’ll hear it one more time, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Engla: (Slow) Ja, jag har en iPhone.
{pause}
Matt: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is
Engla: ja
Matt: meaning “yes.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) ja
Matt: Now repeat
Engla: ja
{Pause}
Matt: And next is
Engla: jag

Engla: Ja, jag har en Android.
Matt: To say "no", in a simple way, just say
Engla: Nej, det har jag inte.
Matt: Which is like saying “No, I don't” in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Engla: (Slowly) Nej, det har jag inte.
Matt: And one more time at normal speed.
Engla: Nej, det har jag inte.
Matt: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you’re visiting Sweden and someone asks you if you have a cell phone. You have an iPhone. What would you say?
Engla: Har du en mobil? (five seconds) Ja, jag har en iPhone.
Matt: Now imagine you have a smartphone. Respond to the question.
Engla: Har du en mobil? (five seconds) Ja, jag har en Smartphone.
Matt: Now imagine you have a Samsung. How would you answer?
Engla: Har du en mobil? (five seconds) Ja, jag har en Samsung.
Matt: Now imagine you have a Android. Answer the speaker’s question.
Engla: Har du en mobil? (five seconds) Ja, jag har en Android.
Matt: You want to ask that person if they have a cell phone. Ask the question.
(5 seconds)
Engla: Har du en mobil?
{pause}
Matt: Now it's time to answer the question with actual information about yourself. Make sure to keep practicing out loud!
Engla: Har du en mobil?
{pause}
Matt: This is the end of Lesson 15.
