Matt: Top 25 Swedish Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 5 “Do you speak Swedish?”. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll encounter a common question for Swedish learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “Do you speak Swedish?”. In Swedish this is...
Engla: Pratar du svenska?
Matt: The first word in the question is..
Engla: pratar
Matt: meaning “to speak” in English.
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) pratar
Matt: Listen again and repeat.
Engla: pratar
{Pause}
Matt: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is..
Engla: du
Matt: meaning “you.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) du
Matt: Now repeat.
Engla: du
Matt: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Engla: pratar du
{pause}
Matt: And next is
Engla: svenska
Matt: meaning “Swedish.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) svenska
Matt: Now repeat.
Engla: svenska
{Pause}
Matt: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Engla: pratar du svenska
{pause}
Matt: Master the following pattern and responses to the question “Do you speak Swedish?”
Engla: Ja, jag kan prata lite.
Matt: "Yes, I speak a little.” Listen to the phrase again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Engla: (Slow) Ja, jag kan prata lite.
{pause}
Matt: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is
Engla: ja
Matt: meaning “yes.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) ja
Matt: Now repeat.
Engla: ja
{Pause}
Matt: And next is
Engla: jag
Matt: meaning “I.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) jag
Matt: Now repeat.
Engla: jag
{Pause}
Matt: And next,
Engla: kan
Matt: meaning “can.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) kan
Matt: Now repeat.
Engla: kan
{Pause}
Matt: And after that is
Engla: prata
Matt: meaning “to speak.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) prata
Matt: Now repeat.
Engla: prata
{Pause}
Matt: And last is
Engla: lite
Matt: meaning “little.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) lite
Matt: Now repeat.
Engla: lite
Matt: Listen to the speaker say “Yes, I speak a little” and then repeat.
Engla: Ja, jag kan prata lite.
Matt: To use a different phrase, let’s replace “a little” with “pretty well.”
Engla: ganska bra
Matt: “pretty well”
Engla: (slow) ganska bra (regular) ganska bra
Matt: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “pretty well.”
Engla: Ja, jag kan prata ganska bra.
Matt: It mostly stays the same, we just replace “a little” with “pretty well.” Now say, “Yes, I speak it pretty well.”
Engla: Ja, jag kan prata ganska bra.
Matt: For more practice, replace “pretty well” with “fluently.”
Engla: flytande
Matt: “fluently”
Engla: (slow) flytande (regular) flytande
Matt: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “fluently.”
Engla: Ja, jag kan prata flytande.
Matt: Again, it’s almost the same, just replace “pretty well” with “fluently.” Now say, “Yes, I speak it fluently.”
Engla: Ja, jag kan prata flytande.
Matt: Now let’s replace “fluently” with “well enough.”
Engla: tillräckligt bra
Matt: “well enough”
Engla: (slow) tillräckligt bra (regular) tillräckligt bra
Matt: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “well enough.”
Engla: Ja, jag kan prata tillräckligt bra.
Matt: Here we simply replaced “fluently” with “well enough.” Now say, “Yes, I speak it well enough.”
Engla: Ja, jag kan prata tillräckligt bra.
Matt: To say "no" in a simple way, just say
Engla: Nej, det gör jag inte.
Matt: This is like saying “No, I don't” in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Engla: (Slowly) Nej, det gör jag inte.
Matt: And one more time at normal speed.
Engla: Nej, det gör jag inte.
Matt: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Sweden and someone asks you if you speak Swedish . You want to answer that you speak a little. Respond to the question.
Engla: Pratar du svenska? (five seconds) Ja, jag kan prata lite.
Matt: Now you want to answer that you speak pretty well. How would you answer?
Engla: Pratar du svenska? (five seconds) Ja, jag kan prata ganska bra.
Matt: You want to answer that you speak fluently. Answer the speaker's question.
Engla: Pratar du svenska? (five seconds) Ja, jag kan prata flytande.
Matt: Now you want to answer that you speak well enough. How would you respond?
Engla: Pratar du svenska? (five seconds) Ja, jag kan prata tillräckligt bra.
Matt: Now you want to ask someone if they speak Swedish. Ask the question.
(5 seconds)
Engla: Pratar du svenska?
Matt: Now it's time to answer the question with actual information about yourself.
Engla: Pratar du svenska?
Matt: This is the end of Lesson 5.
