INTRODUCTION
Morten: Welcome to SwedishPod101.com Absolute Beginner Season 1, Lesson 13 - What Do You Enjoy Doing in Your Spare Time in Sweden? Hej och välkomna, it's me again, Morten.
Jasmine: Hej allihopa. And I'm Jasmine.
Morten: In this lesson, we are talking about leisure activities.
Jasmine: The conversation takes place at the international student night at Studenternas hus near campus in Central Gothenburg.
Morten: James is talking to Anders, his Swedish friend and mentor.
Jasmine: The situation is very casual. Vocab use is fairly standard though. Let's listen to the conversation.

Lesson conversation

Morten: And now, the slow version.
Morten: And now with the translation.
Jasmine: Och nu med översättningen.
Anders: James tycker du om tennis, för jag gillar verkligen tennis.
Morten: James, do you like tennis? Because I really like tennis.
James: Nej tyvärr, inte så mycket. Men jag gillar badminton och bordtennis.
Morten: No, sorry, not so much. But I like badminton and ping-pong.
Anders: Jaha, vad bra, det gör jag med. Vad tycker du annars om att göra på fritiden?
Morten: All right, good, so do I. What else do you do like to do in your spare time?
James: Jag tycker om att spela datorspel, att läsa, att simma och att fjällvandra.
Morten: I like to play computer games, read, swim, and hike in the mountains.
Anders: Jaså, jag är skidentusiast och tycker mycket om vintersport. Och så träffar jag gärna kompisar.
Morten: OK, I am a ski enthusiast and like winter sports very much. And I enjoy meeting friends.
James: Det gör jag med, men vintersport har jag aldrig provat.
Morten: So do I, but I've never tried winter sports.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Morten: All right, Sweden has a lot of nature. Does nature also play an important part in the Swedish leisure activities?
Jasmine: Absolutely, most Swedes love the great outdoors, running, hiking, orienteering, cycling, you name it. All are really popular.
Morten: And what about team sports like soccer?
Jasmine: Yes, those are very popular too. After soccer comes handball, volleyball and innebandy.
Morten: innebandy?
Jasmine: It's a type of hockey. In summer it's played both outdoors and in. And the winter, it's either played indoors or an ice. The ice in innebandy is similar to ice hockey in some ways.
Morten: All right, I take that winter sports are also really popular.
Jasmine: Are you kidding? Of course they are. We tend to have a long winter with lots of snow.
Morten: And I hear that cross-country skiing is particularly popular.
Jasmine: Exactly. That's how people run into winter. Community running tracks often becomes cross-country trails at winter.
Morten: And these trails are also often illuminated, so it's safe to be there at night.
Jasmine: That's correct. Many Swedes are very health and fitness conscious.
Morten: And that way, they can keep it up even in winter when it's dark for long hours even during the day, never a bad thing I suppose. And now, let's take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson.

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Morten: And now, let's take a closer look at the words and phrases in this lesson. We'll start with the phrase.
Jasmine: Det gör jag med, It means?
Morten: So do I, a useful piece of language. If I said Jag gillar fotboll.
Jasmine: I could respond?
Morten: So do I, a useful piece of language. If I said Jag gillar fotboll, I like football.
Jasmine: I could respond Det gör jag med, so do I.
Morten: Listeners, how would you respond when I say Jag gillar svenska.
Jasmine: Det gör jag med, ja just det!
Morten: We've already used gilla. This is one of those tone access verbs, isn't it?
Jasmine: Yes. We'll take a closer look at that. And then another way to say I like in the lesson focus section.
Morten: What else do we have here? Ah yes, annars.
Jasmine: That means otherwise. It can also mean or else, but here it strongly suggests an alternative, like apart from that.
Morten: You tell someone that soccer is your favorite sports, then you go on to say...
Jasmine: Annars tycker jag om volleyboll.
Morten: Apart from that, I like volleyball. How do you say it in Swedish again, that otherwise or apart from that?
Jasmine: Annars. Well done.
Morten: And then we have the word for spare time. What was it again?
Jasmine: Fritiden. It's important to note this word almost exclusively occurs in its definite form.
Morten: So fritiden with the EN at the end. And in your spare time specifically is?
Jasmine: På fritiden. So listeners, how do you say spare time again?
Morten: fritiden, very good.
Jasmine: And one final note on the word simma.
Morten: Meaning to swim, yes. It has a so called false friend, right?
Jasmine: That's right, the word Svimma. Please do not confuse these two.
Morten: Simma means to swim, but Svimma means to faint. So be very careful.
Jasmine: Only one of those words is something you'd want to do in the water.
Morten: Absolutely.

Lesson focus

And now, let's take a look at the grammar section for this lesson. In our lesson focus, we're looking at two different ways of liking something.
Jasmine: And we will look a little more closely at Swedish words with tone accents.
Morten: Above all, we will practice a lot.
Jasmine: That's right, so let's get started.
Morten: Absolutely. First, how do you say to like in Swedish?
Jasmine: Gilla or tycka om
Morten: What's the difference?
Jasmine: Gilla is mostly used for things, ideas et cetera. Not so often for people.
Morten: So tycka om is used for liking people.
Jasmine: And for other things too. The two words are synonyms.
Morten: That means they are mutually interchangeable.
Jasmine: Yes, they can be. Even gilla is sometimes used for people.
Morten: But that sounds more like you appreciate someone whereas if you say tycka om.
Jasmine: That could mean slightly more that you like someone.
Morten: And what about the pronunciation of these words so far? We have used the infinitive forms?
Jasmine: That's right. In the infinitive, both these words have the tone accent.
Morten: How does that work again?
Jasmine: First, for words that have the tone accent, you must at least have two syllables.
Morten: As is common in Swedish, the first syllable is stressed.
Jasmine: Even in words without the accent.
Morten: But with the accent, the stress on the first syllable is followed by a deepened pitch and then it rises again, doesn't it?
Jasmine: Exactly, the intonation goes down on the first syllable and back up on the second.
Morten: So it may sound to the untrained ear that the second syllable is pronounced.
Jasmine: But it isn't. Please listen and repeat after me, gilla.
Morten: Gilla. And what about tycka om?
Jasmine: In that infinitive form, you still have the so called grav accent.
Morten: But it's not as prominent because of the preposition and the phrasal verb, right?
Jasmine: That's correct. In the present tense form however, there is no grav accent.
Morten: No. In the present tense, tycka om has the acute accent.
Jasmine: The acute accent stresses the first syllable and then drops and pitch.
Morten: So it's easier to produce and it's more common in Swedish.
Jasmine: How about some practice.
Morten: Good idea. Let's start by saying I like soccer.
Jasmine: Jag tycker om fotboll. Please listen and repeat, Jag tycker om fotboll
Morten: Jag tycker om fotboll, very good. Now, let's have a sentence with the other verb.
Jasmine: Jag gillar fotboll. Listen carefully especially to the verb and repeat.
Morten: Jag gillar fotboll.
Jasmine: Jag gillar fotboll. Well done, everyone.
Morten: Please do practice the two different accents with the two verbs we've just covered.
Jasmine: In this lesson, we've had a few with the grav accent, gilla, simma, vandra.
Morten: And to the acute accent tycka om and läsa.
Jasmine: So get practicing and thanks for listening so far.
Morten: Yes.
Jasmine: Listeners, do you know the reason flashcards are so popular?
Morten: It's because they work.
Jasmine: We've taken this time tested studying tool and modernized it with my word bank flashcards.

Jättebra jobbat med svenskan! (Really good job on the Swedish)

Kan jag rätta dina meningar lite? (May I correct your sentences a bit?)

You wrote: "Jag inte mycket fritiden"

Correct would be "Jag har inte mycket fritid"

You wrote: "Jag studera dagen och sedan jag praktiska simma, löpning och cycking."

Correct "Jag studerar på dagen och sedan praktiserar jag simning, löpning och cykling."

You wrote: "Helgen jag läsa mina boka och träffa mina kompisar."

Correct "På helgen läser jag mina böcker och träffar mina kompisar"

Great job! Bra jobbat!
