Swedish Survival Phrases lesson 30 - Asking Directions in Swedish.
In today’s lesson, we’ll introduce you to directions that will help you find the place you’re looking for. Previously, we introduced “Is there (something) near here?” and “Where is there a (something)?”
Today, we’re going to cover providing the driver with the directions to get you to where you wanna go. Let’s go over basic directions.
First, we have “Go straight.” In Sweden, “Go straight” is Gå rakt fram.
Gå rakt fram.
Let’s break it down by syllable: Gå rakt fram.
Now, let’s hear it once again, Gå rakt fram.
The first word, gå, means “go.”
Then comes rakt, which means “straight.”
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time, rakt.
rakt
This is followed by fram, which in Swedish is “ahead.”
fram
fram
So all together, we have - Gå rakt fram.
Literally, this means “Go straight ahead.”
“Go straight ahead.”
Now, we’re going to work on turning. Let’s try “Turn right.”
In Swedish, “Turn right” is Sväng höger.
Sväng höger.
The first word, sväng, means “turn.”
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: sväng.
sväng
This is followed by höger, which in Swedish is “right.”
höger
höger
höger
Now, “Turn left.”
In Swedish, “Turn left” is Sväng vänster.
Sväng vänster.
The first word, sväng, still means “turn” and is the same as in sväng höger.
This is followed by vänster, which in Swedish is “left.”
vänster
vänster
In Swedish, “It's on the right” is Det är till höger.
Det är till höger.
Let’s break it down by syllable: Det är till höger.
Now, let’s hear it once again, Det är till höger.
The first word, det, means “it.”
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: det.
det
This is followed by är, which in Swedish is “is.”
är
är
So to recap here, we have - Det är…
Literally, this means “It is…”
Let’s take a look at the next word, till, which means “to.”
till
Lastly, we have höger.
So all together, we have - Det är till höger.
Literally, this means “It is to the right.”
In Swedish, “It is on the left” is Det är till vänster.
Det är till vänster.
Let’s break it down by syllable: Det är till vänster.
Now, let’s hear it once again, Det är till vänster.
The first part, det är till, is the same before. We just replaced höger “right” with “left” vänster.
We just replaced höger “right” with vänster “left.”
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: vänster.
vänster
So all together, we have Det är till vänster.
Literally, this means “It is to the left.”
Don’t be surprised if the person that gives you directions says something like, affär är till höger, which means “The store is on the right,” instead of Det är till höger. This is easy. Just replace the word for “it,” till, with the place you want directions for. Pay attention what the person is telling you.
Det är till höger could also mean that the place you’re looking for is at the next right turn. I would usually point if I’m trying to say that.

Outro

Okay, to close out today’s lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so lycka till. Ok, here we go!
