Swedish Survival Phrases Lesson 58 - Essential Swedish for renting a car.
In today's lesson, we'll introduce you to a phrase that will help you get to the places you need to be! In some places, trains and subways are the way to travel, but it's also very useful to know how to rent a car, scooter, or bicycle.
In Swedish, "I would like to rent a car" is Jag vill hyra en bil.
Jag vill hyra en bil.
Let's break it down by syllable: Jag vill hyra en bil.
Now, here it is once again: Jag vill hyra en bil.
The first word Jag means "I."
This is followed by Vill, which in Swedish is "want."
Vill.
So, to recap here, we have Jag vill. Literally, this means "I want."
Let's take a look at the next word: Hyra, which means "rent."
Hyra.
Hyra.
Lastly, we have En bil, which in Swedish is "a car."
En bil.
En bil.
So, all together, we have Jag vill hyra en bil. Literally, this means "I want to rent a car."
Now, we'll look at the words for other vehicles that will open your transportation options.
In Swedish, the word for "moped" is Moped.
Moped.
Moped.
And the phrase, "I would like to rent a scooter/moped" is Jag vill hyra en moped.
Next, we have the word for "bicycle" which is Cykel.
Cykel.
Cykel.
And the phrase, "I would like to rent a bicycle" is Jag vill hyra en cykel.
The only part that changes is the last word.
If you're renting something, it's also important to know when you must return it. Therefore, we're giving you a phrase you can use to make sure you return it on time.
In Swedish, "When must I return it?" is När ska den lämnas tillbaka?
När ska den lämnas tillbaka?
Let's break it down by syllable: När ska den lämnas tillbaka?
Now, here it is once again: När ska den lämnas tillbaka?
The first word När means "when."
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: När.
När.
This is followed by Ska, which in Swedish is "shall."
Ska.
Ska.
Next, we have Den, which means "it."
Den.
Den.
Let's take a look at the next word: Lämnas, which means "to be returned."
Lämnas.
Lämnas.
Lastly, we have Tillbaka, which means "back."
Tillbaka.
Tillbaka.
A little more informal way of expressing this would be using Tillbaks.
Tillbaks.
So, all together, we have När ska den lämnas tillbaka? Literally, this means "When should it be returned?"
And finally, you may want to return it at a different location. In Swedish, "Can I return it at…?" is Kan jag lämna den vid…?
Kan jag lämna den vid…?
Let's break it down by syllable: Kan jag lämna den vid…?
Now, let’s hear it once again: Kan jag lämna den vid…?
The first word Kan means "can" or "could."
This is followed by Jag, which in Swedish is "I."
And then we have Lämna, which means "return."
Lämna.
Lämna.
Let's take a look at the next word Den, which is "it."
Den.
Den.
Lastly, we got Vid, which in this case serves as "at."
Vid.
Vid.
All together, we have Kan jag lämna den vid…? Literally, this means "Could I leave it at…?"
Then just add the desired location and you're all set. For instance, if you want to return it by the square, you could say Kan jag lämna den vid torget?
In Sweden, you are able to rent cars in several locations: bigger gas stations, car firms, and special companies that let you rent a car. There are also tons of websites for this.
As for bicycles, you can rent them at some camping sites, which is a brilliant way to go and see the town. Some of the cities in Sweden have arranged places to rent bicycles. Several co-operative places make our last phrase very useful if you want to return the bicycle to another place.

Outro

Okay, to close out this lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so Lycka till. Okay, here we go!
