Swedish Survival Phrases lesson 6 - How to say "Where is the Bathroom" in Swedish.
In today’s, lesson we’ll cover an extremely important phrase, “Where is the Bathroom?” In Swedish, “Where is the Bathroom?” is Var är toaletten?
Var är toaletten?
Let’s break it down by syllable: Var är toaletten?
Now, let’s hear it again, Var är toaletten?
Let’s take a look at the components.
The first word, var, means “where.”
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: var.
var
This is followed by är, which in Swedish is “is.”
är
är
är
So to recap here, we have var är. Literally, this means “where is” and this pattern remains the same no matter what you’re asking for.
Let’s take a look at the next word, toaletten, which means “bathroom” or literally toilet.
toaletten

toaletten
So all together, we have Var är toaletten?
Literally, this means “Where is the toilet?”
If you’re at a restaurant or any other public place, it is proper manner to use the phrase “excuse me” when getting someone’s attention before asking any question. Don’t fear the bathrooms in Sweden, as we have signs with the pictures, so it’s very easy to find your destination. In rare cases, there are signs with the Swedish word for men and women instead of pictures. These words are kind of old fashioned and aren’t used that much in the daily conversation, kind of like ladies and gents. In Swedish, the word for men on the men’s front door is herrar and for women is damer.
