Matt: Top 25 Swedish Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 16 “How are you?” in Swedish.
In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll encounter a common question for Swedish learners, and then learn how to answer like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “How are you?” In Swedish this is
Engla: Hur mår du?
Matt: The first word in the question is
Engla: hur
Matt: meaning “how” in English.
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) hur
Matt: Listen again and repeat.
Engla: hur
{Pause}
Matt: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Engla: mår
Matt: meaning “feel.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) mår
Matt: Now repeat.
Engla: mår
{Pause}
Matt: Listen to the the first two words of the question and repeat.
Engla: hur mår
{pause}
Matt: Next is
Engla: du
Matt: meaning “you.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) du
Matt: Now repeat.
Engla: du
{Pause}
Matt: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Engla: hur mår du
{pause}
Matt: (You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies.) Master the following pattern and responses to the question “How are you?”
Engla: Jag mår bra.
Matt: "I'm fine.” You’ll hear it one more time, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Engla: (Slow) Jag mår bra.
{pause}
Matt: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is
Engla: jag
Matt: meaning “I.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) jag
Matt: Now repeat
Engla: jag
{Pause}
Matt: Next is
Engla: mår
meaning “feel.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) mår
Matt:Now repeat.
Engla: mår
{Pause}
Matt: And after that is
Engla: bra
Matt: meaning “good, well,” or in this case, “fine.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) bra
Matt:Now repeat.
Engla: bra
{Pause}Matt: Listen to the speaker say “I'm fine” and then repeat.
Engla: Jag mår bra.
{pause}Matt: To use a different phrase, replace “fine” with “so-so.”
Engla: sådär
Matt: “so-so”
Engla: (slow) sådär (regular) sådär
Matt: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “so-so.”
Engla: Jag mår sådär.
Matt: It mostly stays the same, simply replace “fine” with “so-so.” Say “I'm so-so.”
{pause}
Engla: Jag mår sådär.
Matt: To express a different feeling, replace “so-so” with “pretty good.”
Engla: ganska bra
Matt: “pretty good”
Engla: (slow) ganska bra (regular) ganska bra
Matt: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “pretty good.”
Engla: Jag mår ganska bra.
Matt: Again, it’s almost the same, we just replace “so-so” with “pretty good.” Let’s practice. Say “I'm pretty good.”
{pause}
Engla: Jag mår ganska bra.
Matt: For more practice, replace “pretty good” with “wonderful.”
Engla: underbart
Matt: “wonderful”
Engla: (slow) underbart (regular) underbart
Matt: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “wonderful.”
Engla: Jag mår underbart.
Matt: It’s almost the same, we just replace “pretty good” with “wonderful.” Now say, “I'm wonderful.”
{pause}
Engla: Jag mår underbart.
Matt: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you’re visiting Sweden and someone asks you how you are. You’re fine. How would you answer?
Engla: Hur mår du? (five seconds) Jag mår bra.
Matt: Now imagine you’re so-so. Respond to the question.
Engla: Hur mår du? (five seconds) Jag mår sådär.
Matt: Imagine you’re pretty good. Answer the speaker's question.
Engla: Hur mår du? (five seconds) Jag mår ganska bra.
Matt: Imagine you're wonderful. What do you say?
Engla: Hur mår du? (five seconds) Jag mår underbart.
Matt: You want to ask someone how they’re doing. Ask the question.
(5 seconds)
Engla: Hur mår du?
{pause}
Matt: Now it's time to answer the question with how you’re actually feeling.
Engla: Hur mår du?
{pause}
Matt: This is the end of Lesson 16.
