Matt: Top 25 Swedish Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 21 “Are you hungry?” in Swedish.
In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll encounter a common question for Swedish learners, and then learn how to answer like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “Are you hungry?” In Swedish this is
Engla: Är du hungrig?
Matt: The first word in the question is
Engla: är
Matt: meaning “are” in English.
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) är
Matt: Listen again and repeat.
Engla: är
{Pause}
Matt: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Engla: du
Matt: meaning “you.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) du
Matt: Now repeat.
Engla: du
{Pause}
Matt: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.

Matt: And one more time at normal speed.
Engla: Nej, det är jag inte.
Matt: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you’re visiting Sweden and someone asks you if you're hungry. You want to answer that you’re a little hungry. What would you say?
Engla: Är du hungrig? (five seconds) Ja, jag är lite hungrig.

Engla: Är du hungrig? (five seconds) Ja, jag är alltid hungrig.
Matt: You want to ask someone if they are hungry. Ask the question.
(5 seconds)
Engla: Är du hungrig?
{pause}
Matt: Now it's time to answer the question for yourself.
Engla: Är du hungrig?
{pause}

Hej Nancy,

Jag tycker att vi fått fler och fler bra restauranger med vegetarisk mat i Stockholm, så jag hoppas det ska gå bra. Du får berätta sedan! (I think we've gotten more and more good restaurants with vegetarian food in Stockholm, so I hope it'll work out. Tell me about it once you've been!) 😇

Hej Adolf,

Jag är ganska svensk av mig när det kommer till frukost. Jag tycker om bröd. (I'm pretty Swedish when it comes to breakfast. I like bread.) :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
