Matt: Top 25 Swedish Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 22 “What's this?” in Swedish.
In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll encounter a common question for Swedish learners, and then learn how to answer like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “What's this?” In Swedish this is
Engla: Vad är det här?
Matt: The first word in the question is
Engla: vad
Matt: meaning “what” in English.
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) vad
Matt: Listen again and repeat.
Engla: vad
{Pause}
Matt: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Engla: är
Matt: meaning “is.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) är
Matt: Now repeat.
Engla: är
{Pause}
Matt: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Engla: vad är
{pause}
Matt: And after that
Engla: det
Matt: meaning “that.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) det
Matt: Now repeat.
Engla: det
{Pause}
Matt: Listen to the first three words of the question and repeat.
Engla: vad är det
{pause}
Matt: And next,
Engla: här
Matt: meaning “here.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) här
Matt: Now repeat.
Engla: här
{Pause}
Matt: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Engla: vad är det här
{pause}
Matt: (You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies.) Master the following pattern and responses to the question “What's this?”
Engla: Det är en kamera.
Matt: "It's a camera.” Listen as it’s repeated one more time, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Engla: (Slow) Det är en kamera.
{pause}
Matt: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is
Engla: det
Matt: meaning “it.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) det
Matt: Now repeat
Engla: det
{Pause}
Matt: And next is
Engla: är

Matt: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you’re visiting Sweden and someone asks you what something is. It’s a camera. What do you tell them?

Hej Nancy,

Min mammas katt är alltid hungrig. Men han tycker om fisk! (My mom's cat is always hungry. But, he likes fish!) 😜
