In this quick lesson, you’ll learn Swedish country vocabulary.
Before we start, did you know Sweden shares a bridge with another country? Do you know which country you can reach by crossing this bridge?
Keep watching for the answer at the end.
Sverige
"Sweden"
[SLOW] Sverige
Sverige
You may be surprised to hear the “g” [eng/swe] pronounced like a “j”. While there are rules regarding the pronunciation, the “j” pronunciation is an exception to those.
Jack plans a summer trip with Steve.
Jack: Vart kan jag åka på en lång sommarsemester?
Steve: Sverige har långa somrar. Vad sägs om Sverige?
Finland
"Finland"
[SLOW] Finland
Finland
Spelled just like in English, but with a slight difference in pronunciation.
Steve and Alexandra chat about travel destinations.
Steve: Varför är Finland så populärt?
Alexandra: Finland är välkänt för sina sjöar.
Norge
"Norway"
[SLOW] Norge
Norge
Here we have the “j” sounding “g” again.
Tom and Oscar chat about travel destinations.

Oscar: Norge är välkänt för sina fjordar.
Danmark
"Denmark"
[SLOW] Danmark
Danmark
While Denmark and Sweden have had a long history of rivalry, the last war was more than 200 years ago. These days, the two countries have strong ties due to cultural characteristics.
Tom and Oscar chat about different countries.
Tom: Kan du berätta om ett nordiskt land?
Oscar: Danmark är ett nordiskt land.
Frankrike
"France"
[SLOW] Frankrike
Frankrike
This literally means the “frank kingdom” or “frank empire”. It’s actually the same pattern as for “Norge” and “Sverige”, just that those use old Nordic versions of “rike”
Alexandra and Maria chat about different countries.
Alexandra: Vad är Frankrike känt för?
Maria: Frankrike är välkänt för vin.
Syrien
"Syria"
[SLOW] Syrien
Syrien
Many country names, especially European and Middle Eastern countries often follow the pattern having “-ien” added at the end.
Lina and Alexandra chat about different countries.
Lina: Vilket land har en rik historia?
Alexandra: Syrien har en rik historia.
Italien
"Italy"
[SLOW] Italien
Italien
Italian food is very popular in Sweden, so you would probably hear the word “italiensk” (Italian) a lot when in Sweden.
Susan and Oscar chat about travel destinations.
Susan: Vilket land är känt för god mat?
Oscar: Italien är välkänt för sin mat.
England
"England"
[SLOW] England
England
While spelled the same way as in English, we pronounce it in a slightly different manner.
Oscar and Tom chat about different countries.
Oscar: Vet du något om England?
Tom: Ja, England är en del av Storbritannien.
Tyskland
"Germany"
[SLOW] Tyskland
Tyskland
Here is another common pattern, adding “-land” after the name of its people. Just like with Finland!
Lina plans a trip to Europe with Tom.
Lina: Vilket land borde jag besöka i Europa?
Tom: Jag rekommenderar att besöka Tyskland.
Polen
"Poland"
[SLOW] Polen

An exception to the common patterns, this time the English version has “-land” in the end.
