Swedish Vocabulary Words

When you first begin learning how to speak Swedish you might make many mistakes. This is common among new students and nothing to be embarrassed about. The important thing to do when you make a mistake is to learn the correct way, and remember to do it right next time. Like the saying goes, get back on your horse, or if you are trying to learn Swedish, your häst.

If you are trying to improve and expand your Swedish vocabulary, one of the most useful tools at your disposal will be a Swedish dictionary. With a dictionary at your side you can quickly look up any phrases or words. For example, if you didn’t catch it above, häst means horse. A comprehensive Swedish dictionary would even be able to show you how to pronounce häst and a few Swedish phrases you could use the word in.

A good trick for anyone wanting to increase their Swedish vocabulary is to pick 10-15 random words out of your dictionary and study everything that is listed about that word. Study your group of Swedish words everyday and within a few days you may be able to move on to another group of words. If you don’t have a dictionary close at hand, Swedishpod101 offers a dictionary as part of their Swedish podcast. The dictionary is available online at all times and, along with their lessons, is a great way to pick up on new Swedish phrases and words.

Another way to use your dictionary is to learn the Swedish alphabet. While the 29-letter Latin-based alphabet is similar to English, there are three extra letters that are not found in the English language. Brush up on your alphabet, your Swedish vocabulary, and common words and phrases all at once.

When you are ready to work on your pronunciation log back on to your podcast and take advantage of the live recordings of Swedish people saying Swedish words. This can be an invaluable service when you are trying to figure out how to pronounce those three extra letters in the Swedish alphabet. The important thing to remember is that even if you don’t get it right the first time you will be given plenty of opportunities to practice. Learning a new language can be a daunting task, but for those that persevere it is gratifying to be able to hold your own in a Swedish language conversation.
