Matt: Top 25 Swedish Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 4 “What do you do?” in Swedish. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll encounter a common question for Swedish learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “What do you do?”. In Swedish this is
Engla: Vad gör du?
Matt: The first word in the question is...
Engla: vad
Matt: meaning “what” in English.
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) vad
Matt: Listen again and repeat.
Engla: vad
{Pause}
Matt: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Engla: gör
Matt: meaning “do.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) gör
Matt: Now repeat.
Engla: gör
{Pause}
Matt: Listen to the first two words of the question and then repeat.
Engla: vad gör
{pause}
Matt: And after that is
Engla: du
Matt: meaning “you.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) du
Matt: Now repeat.
Engla: du
{Pause}
Matt: Now listen to the entire question and repeat.
Engla: vad gör du
{pause}
Matt: (You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies.) Master the following pattern and responses to the question “What do you do?”
Engla: Jag är lärare.
Matt: "I'm a teacher.” Listen as the phrase is repeated slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Engla: (Slow) Jag är lärare.
{pause}
Matt: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is
Engla: jag
Matt: meaning “I.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) jag
Matt: Now repeat.
Engla: jag
{Pause}
Matt: And after that,
Engla: är
Matt: meaning “are.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) är
Matt:Now repeat.
Engla: är
{Pause}
Matt: And after that is
Engla: lärare
Matt: meaning “teacher.”
Engla: (Slow, by syllable) lärare
Matt:Now repeat.
Engla: lärare
{Pause}Matt: Listen to the speaker say “I'm a teacher” and then repeat.
Engla: Jag är lärare.
{pause}Matt: To expand on the pattern, let’s replace “teacher” with “lawyer.” In Swedish this is
Engla: advokat
Matt: “lawyer”
Engla: (slow) advokat (regular) advokat
Matt: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “lawyer.”
Engla: Jag är advokat.
Matt: We replaced “teacher” with “lawyer,” but the phrase mostly stays the same. Now say, “I'm a lawyer.”
{pause}
Engla: Jag är advokat.
Matt: To expand on the pattern, replace “lawyer” with “plumber.”
Engla: rörmokare
Matt: “plumber”
Engla: (slow) rörmokare (regular) rörmokare
Matt: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “plumber.”
Engla: Jag är rörmokare.
Matt: Again, it mostly stays the same, just replace “lawyer” with “plumber.” Say “I'm a plumber.”
{pause}
Engla: Jag är rörmokare.
Matt: For more practice, let’s replace “plumber” with “office worker.”
Engla: kontorsarbetare
Matt: “office worker”
Engla: (slow) kontorsarbetare (regular) kontorsarbetare
Matt: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “office worker.”
Engla: Jag är kontorsarbetare.
Matt: Here we simply replaced “plumber” with “office worker.” Now say, “I'm an office worker.”
{pause}
Engla: Jag är kontorsarbetare.
Matt: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you’re visiting Sweden and someone asks what you do. You’re a teacher. Respond to the question.
Engla: Vad gör du? (five seconds) Jag är lärare.
Matt: Imagine you’re a lawyer. How would you respond?
Engla: Vad gör du? (five seconds) Jag är advokat.
Matt: Imagine you’re a plumber. Answer the speaker's question.
Engla: Vad gör du? (five seconds) Jag är rörmokare.
Matt: Imagine you're an office worker. How will you answer?
Engla: Vad gör du? (five seconds) Jag är kontorsarbetare.
Matt: You want to learn what that person does. Ask the question.
(5 seconds)
Engla: Vad gör du?
{pause}
Matt: Now it's time to answer the question with actual information about yourself. Make sure to practice out loud.
Engla: Vad gör du?
Matt: This is the end of Lesson 4.
